The History of Candles: From Antiquity to Modern Scented Candles
The first candles in antiquity
Candles have accompanied humanity for thousands of years, long before electricity. From a simple means of lighting, they evolved into a symbol of warmth and atmosphere.
The first forms of candles appeared in ancient Egypt and China, where natural materials such as animal fats, vegetable oils, and beeswax were used. In ancient Rome, candles became more widespread, mainly for lighting homes and public spaces.
The Middle Ages and the use of the candle
During the Middle Ages, beeswax candles were used primarily in churches and by the upper social classes due to their high cost. Most people used simpler and cheaper versions made from animal fats, which, however, had a stronger odor and burned less cleanly.
Industrial Revolution
In the 19th century, candle production changed dramatically. The introduction of new materials such as paraffin made candles more economical, cleaner burning, and widely available to the public. At the same time, candles began to lose their practical role due to electricity.
From utility to decoration
In the 20th century, candles entered a new era: from a lighting tool, they became an element of decoration, atmosphere, and relaxation. This is where the concept of scented candles began to emerge.
Modern scented candles
Today, handmade scented candles, especially those made from natural soy wax, have become particularly popular. They offer clean burning, longer duration, natural scents, and aesthetic value to a space. They are no longer just a lighting product, but an experience.
And we, at The Secret Stores, wanted to continue this tradition in our own way. We make handmade scented candles from natural soy wax, without paraffin or unnecessary additives, with respect for nature and people. Every candle we create is a small continuation of this long history, made with passion for today.
